One of the most famous maps of the Gold Rush era, Colton’s handsome 1849 map is a combination of the 1848 maps of Frémont and Tanner. Although there may have been a special issue of “separates,” the map was primarily published as an illustration in Oregon and California in 1848, Jesse Quinn Thornton’s account of his travels west by wagon train from Independence, Missouri, in May 1846 with the Donner, Reed, and other families. Fortunately, he split off from the Donner party in June to join wagons headed for Oregon where he planned to settle. In 1847, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of the Oregon provisional government. His book of travels was published by Harper and Brothers in two volumes in 1849 and contained the present map highlighting the Gold Region as well as an appendix with more than 100 pages on the fabulous "new finds" in the California gold fields. The map offered here displays a Harper and Brothers imprint, indicating that it originally was bound into Thornton’s book. The map shows a vast Upper California, the northern border of Texas extending north to Bent’s Fort, and a large Nebraska Territory reaching to the Canadian border. It is among the best of the commercial maps rushed to press in 1849 to meet the clamor for details on the route to California and location of the gold fields. An outstanding addition to a collection of California and the American West.
